This announcement uses the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce (Title 5 USC Section 9905) direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.
Responsibilities- Ensure adequate operation of the vessel during watch, checking steering gear for worn parts, and performing necessary preventative maintenance.
- Stand regular bridge watch and direct dredging operations in accordance with navigation roles and regulations, dredging plans, and specifications.
- Instruct Quartermaster on compass course or ranges to follow and direct recording of dredging data for inspection reports.
- Direct the flow of dredged material to keep the dredge in trim and operate pilot house controls for starting, stopping, speeding up, slowing down, and reversing dredge motors as required.
- Keep a log of vessel movement during watch and record other pertinent data such as weather conditions and tide flow.
- Dock and undock at mooring barges under all conditions, exercising care not to damage the dredge or barge.
- Coordinate pump-out operations with shore parties by maintaining two-way radio contact to monitor flow and consistency of pumped dredged material.
- Must possess a valid United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC) endorsed with a license as Third Mate of Self-Propelled Vessels of Unlimited Tonnage Upon Oceans.
- Must possess a Standard of Training/Watchkeeping (STCW) endorsement as Officer in Charge of a Navigational watch or higher.
- Must possess a valid Transportation Worker's Identification Credential (TWIC).
Spends most of time in wheelhouse. Occasionally goes outside in all kinds of weather to attend to certain duties, being exposed to the elements and subject to slipping on wet decks. Danger of drowning exists in case of accident.
