Job Overview

The Instrument Reliability Engineer plays a pivotal role, reporting directly to the Lead Instrumentation & Controls Engineer.

This position is responsible for guaranteeing that all instrumentation at Freeport LNG operates safely, efficiently, and reliably, aiming to achieve production targets while minimizing unexpected equipment downtime.

The intricate nature and volume of instruments within both the Liquefaction (LQF) and Pretreatment (PTF) Facilities necessitate a high degree of technical proficiency to assess and monitor the condition of instruments and valves.

This role will proactively identify solutions to prevent reliability and availability challenges while meeting production demands. The Instrument Reliability Engineer will oversee integrity in areas such as condition-based monitoring, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Additionally, this position requires collaboration with Maintenance and Operations teams to aid in troubleshooting and provide technical assistance.

Location/Travel Information

This role is primarily based at the Quintana LQF Terminal, with regular travel to various off-site locations as needed.

It is essential for the incumbent to maintain a valid, unexpired driver’s license at all times to fulfill the job's essential functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor Condition-Based Metrics and Instrument Equipment Health KPIs:
  • Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) instruments and valves
  • Temperature, pressure, and flow measurement devices
  • Support Maintenance in:
  • Preventive Maintenance (PM) and the development of appropriate PM tasks
  • Troubleshooting
  • Repairs and Modifications
  • Creating detailed Statements of Work (SOW) for execution
  • Conducting Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCA)
  • Evaluating instrument retrofits, including Business Case, Technical Assessment, Risk Assessment, and Cost Estimation.
  • Assist in Process Trip Investigations.
  • Initiate Management of Change for instruments/minor brownfield projects as necessary, providing Subject Matter Expert (SME) oversight and aiding in project deliverables such as Design Basis, instrument and electrical specifications, data sheets, loop diagrams, and Hazardous Area Classification modifications.
  • Plan for instrument equipment obsolescence
  • Identify and resolve 'Bad Actor' issues.
  • Develop and utilize Reliability Analytics tools (e.g., Weibull analysis, growth plots, Monte Carlo simulations)
  • Establish and maintain instrumentation reliability KPIs
  • Implement Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) for instrumentation
  • Manage Instrumentation Medium usage
  • Develop and sustain a system for testing and monitoring SIS instruments
  • Stay updated on relevant codes and standards, participating in industry conferences/seminars and new technology presentations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Engineering Manager.
Essential Functions

  • Conduct Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) for complex incidents related to instrumentation and controls.
  • Provide oversight and ensure the implementation of Reliability-Centered Maintenance for all types of instruments.
  • Assist facility personnel with operational and maintenance challenges concerning instrumentation and valves, offering technical support as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Responsible for maintaining records and documentation for regulatory compliance related to instruments and valves.
Education, Certification, and Experience

Minimum Education Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering

Minimum Experience Required:

  • 5-10+ years of direct experience applying engineering reliability principles and analytical tools related to instrumentation.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

Preferred Experience:

  • 10+ years of experience in the design, maintenance, and reliability of instruments, valves, analyzers, DCS control systems, PLCs, and SCADA systems.
  • Experience in operating plant maintenance and support.
Competencies

  • Proficient in reliability analytical tools and techniques such as Weibull analysis and growth plots.
  • Experienced with Maintenance Execution Systems (MES) like SAP.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills, capable of evaluating and prioritizing multiple tasks to align with plant objectives while acting with urgency when necessary.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with all organizational levels, including operations, technical staff, plant management, contractors, and vendors.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient in standard MS Office applications and SAP Plant Maintenance or similar systems.
  • Ability to work safely, efficiently, and effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal technical communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and proactive.
  • Exceptional troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity principles.
  • Must possess the ability to operate a motor vehicle to perform duties at various FLNG locations.
Work Environment

This position is primarily situated in a professional office setting. The role routinely utilizes standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing systems.

While performing job duties, the employee may encounter fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibrations. The employee may also be exposed to various extreme conditions at construction sites, where noise levels can be high.
