Job Summary

Cook County Health is seeking a highly skilled Medical Assistant to join our team. As a Medical Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting both clinical and administrative functions, contributing to the continuity of care for our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtain and document patient medical history, vital signs, and other relevant information accurately and efficiently.
  • Prepare patient rooms for medical visits, maintain cleanliness, and ensure a comfortable environment.
  • Assist with clerical and administrative duties, including answering phones, sorting medical charts, and scheduling appointments.
  • Perform various laboratory procedures, including phlebotomy, EKGs, and point-of-care testing.
  • Assist physicians with physical exams, minor surgical procedures, and treatments, such as dressings and ear irrigations.
  • Administer oral medications and injections, accurately documenting in medical records.
  • Provide first aid and other related procedures, including removing and changing dressings, applying bandages, and removing sutures.
  • Communicate patient needs to providers, including refill requests, tests, and patient concerns.
  • Support the provider staff with completing referrals for diagnostic testing and specialist follow-up.
  • Participate in Joint Commission Surveys and rounds.
Requirements
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or five years of recent full-time professional Medical Assistant experience.
  • Certificate as a Medical Assistant through a recognized organization, such as the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One year of experience as a Medical Assistant or in a related clinical capacity within a healthcare environment.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • Knowledge and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Word, Excel).
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate awareness of HIPAA.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and respect in caring for patients of all age groups and cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail, accuracy, and precision.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in performing work duties.
  • Strong emergency response skills.
  • Ability to observe environmental and OSHA safety practices.
Working Conditions

In general, this position exists in a medical office work environment. Frequently exposed to various hazards of patient care.

Equipment Used

Standard medical equipment, such as stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, electronic and emergency equipment, EKGs, centrifuges, nebulizers, and various monitoring devices.

Physical Demands

The incumbent stands and walks 80% of the day. May be required to lift/push/pull up to 25lbs. Constantly uses both hands and fingers for handling.
