Job Summary:

The Correctional Officer is responsible for the care, custody, and control of inmates housed at the Worcester County Jail and House of Corrections. This role requires a strong commitment to public safety, a high level of physical fitness, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain custodial care and control of inmates, ensuring their safety and security at all times.
  • Conduct regular rounds, head counts, and security checks to prevent disturbances, violence, and escapes.
  • Observe and report on inmate behavior, identifying potential issues and taking proactive steps to prevent crises.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with inmates, providing support and guidance to aid in their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
  • Prepare and submit reports on incidents, accidents, and security breaches, as well as monthly evaluation reports on inmates.
  • Supervise and train Correctional Officers of lower seniority, ensuring they are equipped to perform their duties effectively.
  • Enforce maintenance and cleanliness standards in the cell blocks and prison areas.
  • Exercise authority and discretion in emergency situations, using physical force when necessary to maintain order and security.
Requirements:
  • Associate's degree or higher education, or 60 credits towards completion of a Bachelor's Degree.
  • Two years of relevant work experience may be used to substitute for a degree.
  • Physical ability and capacity to maintain custodial care and control of inmates, use lawful force and weapons.
  • Mental capacity to handle stressful situations, physical danger, and risk of serious injury to person and others.
  • Ability to work in a semi-military organization and maintain confidentiality.
