Position Overview

The role of a Sterile Processing Technician is vital in ensuring that surgical instruments and medical supplies are prepared and maintained in a sterile condition for use in various medical procedures. This position involves a comprehensive process of decontamination, cleaning, sterilization, and organization of medical equipment, adhering to the strict guidelines set forth by health authorities and institutional infection control protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Instrument Preparation: Demonstrates proficiency in the preparation of surgical instruments, ensuring thorough decontamination, assembly, and sterilization in accordance with departmental policies. Ensures all instruments are devoid of contaminants prior to sterilization and accurately assembles instrument sets and trays.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adheres to safety standards and infection control protocols while working in decontamination areas. Effectively operates sterilization equipment, documenting all processes in compliance with established standards. Conducts biological controls and tests, maintaining accurate records for each procedure and reporting any safety concerns to supervisory personnel.
  • Support Services: Assists in the management of Case Carts and Sterile Core operations, accurately preparing for upcoming surgical procedures and completing necessary documentation for billing and compliance. Responds promptly to urgent requests while maintaining high standards of accuracy and efficiency.
  • Additional Duties: Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisory staff.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years old with the necessary education and/or experience to fulfill the required competencies outlined in the job description.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in Sterile Processing or completion of vocational/technical training in fields such as Instrument Specialist, Central Supply, or Surgical Technology.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Must obtain at least one of the following certifications within 18 months of employment:
    ◦ Certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD)
    ◦ Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) Certification

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires medium physical work, including the ability to lift weights up to 50 lbs occasionally and up to 25 lbs frequently.
