OVERVIEW

The selected candidate will be responsible for the assembly, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of automated electro-optical testing systems. Proficiency in visual inspections, recognizing atypical behavior in devices under test (DUT), and experience with benchtop electrical testing equipment are highly valued. Familiarity with Class IV open-beam laser safety and best practices in optomechanics is preferred. The candidate will work autonomously, identifying knowledge gaps and engaging in proactive learning. This role entails managing a comprehensive opto-electronics laboratory to facilitate advanced research on components for augmented and virtual reality displays. The candidate will be tasked with executing experiments as designed and constructing opto-mechanical and opto-electrical systems according to specifications. Exceptional organizational abilities, meticulous attention to detail, and a solid foundation in laser systems and laboratory safety protocols are essential.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Assemble, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot automated electro-optical testing systems.
  • Conduct visual inspections and identify unexpected behaviors in devices under test (DUT).
  • Manage a complete opto-electronics laboratory to support pioneering research for augmented and virtual reality components.
  • Construct opto-mechanical and opto-electrical systems based on experimental designs.
  • Ensure the laboratory remains clean and organized.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and protocols.
  • Oversee the inventory of laboratory supplies and materials.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optics, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience with automated testing systems for electrical or optical hardware.
  • Proficient in Python, LabView, or MATLAB for instrument control at a novice to intermediate level.
  • Experience with Class IV open-beam laser safety and optomechanical best practices.
  • Demonstrated fine motor skills for assembling and soldering sub-millimeter components under a stereomicroscope.
  • A strong desire to work in a laboratory setting, conducting experiments and collecting data.
  • Experience in building automated testing systems within the last 5 years.
  • Proven background in a laser laboratory environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of laser safety protocols and regulations.
  • Familiarity with laser systems, optics, and associated equipment.
  • Experience with benchtop electrical testing equipment.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Basic understanding of data analysis and statistical methodologies.
  • Physical capability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform tasks related to laboratory upkeep.
  • Willingness to work on-site full-time.
