Qualifications

To be eligible for this role, candidates must fulfill the following:

  • Meet any additional criteria specified in the job announcement.
  • Applicants who are in the process of completing training or licensure may be considered for tentative selection but cannot be officially hired until all qualifications are satisfied.
  • Current VA-employed physicians who met the previous qualification standards at the time of their initial appointment are recognized as having met the basic requirements for this position.
Basic Requirements:
  • Citizenship: Only U.S. citizens may be appointed, unless it is impossible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Possess a Doctor of Medicine degree or an equivalent qualification from an accredited institution.
  • Hold a current, unrestricted medical license to practice in any U.S. State, Territory, or the District of Columbia.
Residency Training:

Candidates must have completed residency training in an accredited core specialty program that qualifies them for board certification.

Additional Requirement:

Must qualify for a faculty position at the affiliated university.

  • Maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
Preferred Experience:

Board eligible or board certified in Cardiology with specialized training in Heart Failure is highly desirable.

Physical Requirements:

A physical examination will be conducted based on the demands of the position, which may include:

  • Long periods of standing or walking in clinical settings.
  • Requirements for mental and sensory capabilities, including recall, reasoning, problem-solving, and effective communication.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
Responsibilities:

The Advanced Heart Failure Specialist will:

  • Manage heart failure patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Engage in general cardiology responsibilities, including attending to inpatient consults and supervising continuity clinics.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive heart failure care, including requests for advanced therapies.
  • Develop an inpatient consultative service to educate newly diagnosed patients and facilitate their transition to outpatient services.
  • Supervise and mentor fellows, residents, and medical students.

The work schedule generally follows a Monday through Friday format, with potential for additional hours as needed for acute patient care. Weekend coverage may also be required.
