Research Scientist in Pediatric Oncology
The University of California, San Francisco is seeking a dedicated Research Scientist to join our team in a pioneering investigation into the protein translational regulation of a critical fusion in pediatric oncology. This role is situated within the Division of Pediatric Oncology, focusing on innovative approaches to combat pediatric cancers.
Research Focus: Our laboratory is committed to uncovering new therapeutic vulnerabilities in pediatric sarcomas, which are malignancies of connective tissue. We utilize tumor samples and patient-derived xenograft models to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of novel treatments. Our methodology includes genetic and chemical screening to identify promising targets, validating the underlying molecular mechanisms, and designing preclinical trials aimed at expediting the clinical application of our discoveries.
Current Projects: We are actively engaged in multiple projects that focus on the PAX3-FOXO1 oncogene in pediatric rhabdomyosarcoma. This fusion transcription factor alters the epigenetic landscape of cells, resulting in aggressive and lethal cancers in children and young adults. Our research has led to innovative strategies to modulate PAX3-FOXO1 levels in cells, resulting in tumor regression in preclinical models. Our ongoing objectives include identifying combination therapies to enhance the effectiveness of this approach and employing chemical and genetic tools to elucidate the molecular prerequisites for translational control that facilitate this treatment strategy.
Mentorship Opportunities: This position offers the chance for close mentorship from experienced faculty members, as well as collaboration with other principal investigators within the Cancer Center's Pediatric Malignancies Program. Newly recruited research scientists will also play a vital role in mentoring laboratory technicians, medical students, and fellows.
Qualifications: We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a PhD, MD/PhD, or MD degree. Candidates should possess significant experience in genetics and molecular biology (including PCR, gene expression analysis, and next-generation sequencing) as well as biochemistry (such as immunoblotting and advanced proteomic techniques). While training in oncology, bioinformatics, and/or preclinical studies (including experience with laboratory animals and pharmacology) is advantageous, it is not mandatory. The ideal candidate should demonstrate the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a diverse team. Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills are essential, along with a proven track record of scientific productivity and the capacity to see projects through to completion. We strongly encourage applications from individuals belonging to underrepresented minority groups and women.
