Position Overview

The High Line Corporation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing public spaces and fostering community connections. Our mission is to transform urban environments into vibrant, healthy neighborhoods.

As a historic elevated park, the High Line offers a unique blend of nature, art, and community engagement. Visitors can enjoy scenic gardens, artistic installations, performances, and refreshments while experiencing a distinctive view of the city.

Our funding primarily comes from generous donations, and we operate in partnership with the City of New York under a license agreement with NYC Parks.

Job Summary

This is a full-time, non-exempt, temporary role that involves outdoor work in varying weather conditions, including evenings and weekends. The position spans from early spring through fall.

The seasonal custodian plays a vital role within the Custodial team. Reporting to the custodial manager, you will collaborate with a diverse group of custodians, horticulturists, maintenance staff, and administrative personnel to uphold the highest standards of cleanliness and organization throughout the park.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure cleanliness across the High Line, including public areas, restrooms, access points, elevators, stairs, drinking fountains, and office spaces.
  • Utilize specialized cleaning products and techniques, adhering to manufacturer guidelines.
  • Identify and remove graffiti, unauthorized advertising, litter, and other debris.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal as needed.
  • Maintain and monitor custodial supply inventory.
  • Respond promptly to spills, restroom issues, hazards, and various requests.
  • Work cooperatively with team members to complete daily tasks efficiently.
  • Communicate effectively with management regarding the status of tasks and projects.
  • Collaborate with programming, operations, and events teams to prepare the park for visitors and enforce park regulations.
  • Operate pressure washers, snow removal equipment, and other small machinery.
  • Serve as an ambassador for the organization, providing excellent customer service to visitors, vendors, and colleagues.
  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Minimum of 1 year of custodial experience.
  • Dependable, punctual, and detail-oriented.
  • Effective verbal communication skills with both staff and the public.
  • Ability to maintain a consistent schedule for maintenance and cleaning tasks.
  • Capable of working independently or as part of a team.
  • Exhibit sound judgment and professionalism.

Preferred:

  • 1-2 years of custodial or maintenance experience, particularly in public or outdoor settings.

Physical Requirements

Candidates must be able to:

  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions and be available for overtime, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Use power equipment safely after receiving appropriate training.
  • Navigate the park efficiently, performing tasks that may involve reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/moving up to 50 lbs regularly, and occasionally over 75 lbs with proper techniques.
