Job Summary

As an Instrumentation Systems Engineer at Cummins, you will be responsible for installing, configuring, calibrating, and repairing instrumentation systems. You will develop proper instrumentation setup and troubleshoot issues as they occur.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate, calibrate, install, program, repair, design, and fabricate instrumentation and data acquisition systems.
  • Maintain data acquisition systems, test cells operations, rigs and rig rooms; calibrate, install, program, troubleshoot, repair, and assemble test systems, general and specialized instrumentation.
  • Install, operate, modify, and troubleshoot PCs and PC networks used for instrumentation engineering activities.
  • Evaluate and specify new equipment; develop new technology; install and maintain electronic engine monitoring systems.
  • Fabricate and assemble test fixtures and servo-hydraulic systems; operate, troubleshoot, and repair hydraulic systems, shakers, and rigs; calibrate transducers and systems; install and calibrate strain gauges and thermocouples (micro).
  • Maintain parts and equipment inventories.
  • Create and maintain electronic documentation.
  • Use a number of general tools including but not limited to digital multimeter, soldering iron, function generator, and frequency generator.
  • Read and interpret electrical wiring diagrams.
  • Work with and train apprentices and technicians.
  • Interface with customers, suppliers, engineers, and other functions.
  • Coordinate programs including planning, scheduling, ordering, and tracking.
  • Participate in the maintenance of quality procedures.
  • Lead and participate in improvement projects.
  • Develop and give presentations to customers and suppliers.
Competencies
  • Data Acquisition - Prepare samples, verify equipment calibration, and perform tests according to an approved standard procedure or work instruction in a manner that ensures and results in data that can be trusted and delivered to the engineer or customer.
  • Data Reporting - Prepare documentation in a manner that clearly organizes and presents testing methods, instrument settings, the data, and analysis to allow the engineer and customer to understand the results and form accurate conclusions and recommendations.
  • Product Function Test System Design - Interpret test equipment specifications from test standards or lab customer requirements; select and integrate appropriate equipment, instrumentation, and software to control boundary conditions and collect measurement data; assess capability of the lab equipment against the requirements and support infrastructure.
  • Test Article Build - Assemble test articles according to test requirements, including all necessary installation or accommodations for instrumentation, in a manner that allows the test articles to successfully undergo product functional test.
  • Test Setup and Configuration - Interpret test plan to determine optimal location and orientation within a test space in accordance with local safety and environmental requirements and fabricate required system with appropriate materials.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

High school diploma, certificate of completion of secondary education or equivalent experience in an appropriate STEM field is required. Regionally applicable certification or two-year Associates Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of study may be required. This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

High school diploma, GED or equivalent required with Department of Labor Certification OR Associates degree from an accredited program in a related field and at least two years of relevant experience OR Bachelors degree in a related field OR Relevant military education and experience.
