Job Title: Internal Auditor

Gallatin County, MT is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Internal Auditor to join our team.

Job Summary:

The Internal Auditor will be responsible for conducting financial audits, monitoring internal controls, and providing recommendations for improvement. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of governmental accounting practices and procedures, as well as experience with financial software and audit software.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct financial audits, including bank accounts, internal controls, transition audits, grant audits, contract audits, and departmental audits.
  • Perform monitoring audits on a regular and ongoing basis.
  • Develop and execute fixed asset audits of County equipment and continuing County property.
  • Train new County employees on financial matters related to their department and relationship with the Auditors office.
  • Perform reconciliations of the County's claims/invoices, payroll, and jury and witness accounts.
  • Conduct various administrative duties, including approving invoices for payment, scheduling meetings, answering telephones, copying, scanning, and filing documents.
  • Respond to vendor and staff inquiries and problems regarding tracking payments, resolving vendor problems or payment errors.
  • Provide backup for the County Auditor, including attending official meetings, meeting and communicating with the public, boards, department heads, and elected officials.
  • Assist in the management of the County's unclaimed warrants.
  • Examine and approve claims and invoices from County departments and boards, reviewing each invoice to ensure legitimacy, reasonableness, and compliance with Federal and State laws.
  • Assist with the countywide risk assessments to identify areas of higher risk and recommending areas to be audited.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance, with coursework through advanced accounting and auditing or equivalent.
  • One to two years of related work experience in governmental accounting and auditing.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to provide own transportation to conduct out of office job duties.
  • Ability to pass a criminal history check and background investigation.
