Genetic Counselor Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled Genetic Counselor to join our team at Johns Hopkins University. As a Genetic Counselor, you will play a critical role in providing genetic counseling to patients referred for a wide range of indications, including maternal age, abnormal screening results, abnormal ultrasound findings, family history concerns, pregnancy loss, teratogenic exposures, and infertility.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare for counseling sessions by reviewing previous testing results, researching conditions, and arranging for appropriate testing.
  • Coordinate testing, including chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, ultrasound, and carrier screening.
  • Develop strong case management skills to ensure effective patient care.
  • Communicate with maternal-fetal medicine physicians, other medical specialists, referring obstetric providers, and laboratories.
  • Provide follow-up by contacting patients and referring providers with test results, documentation of counseling sessions, and results of testing.
  • Present cases in weekly conferences for management and student education.
  • Teach genetic counseling to graduate students, fellows/residents, medical students, and gynecology/obstetrics residents.
Requirements:
  • Master's Degree from a graduate program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
  • Seek and maintain certification as a genetic counselor from the ABGC within one year of hire date.
  • One year of genetic counseling experience, preferably in general pediatric or adult genetics clinic.
