Veterinary Technician Student Externship Opportunity

Job Summary:

Seeking a motivated and dedicated veterinary technician student to join our team for an 8-12 week externship rotation at The Marine Mammal Center. As a veterinary technician student extern, you will gain hands-on experience in a marine mammal rehabilitation hospital, assisting with daily procedures, animal care, and research.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist with daily procedures, including exams, procedures, sedation, and anesthesia, under the supervision of experienced staff.
  • Work closely with staff technicians to ensure daily tasks and preparation for the next day are complete.
  • Participate in animal care crew one day a week to gain husbandry experience and develop skills in animal handling and care.
  • Complete onboarding and training modules electronically to ensure a smooth transition into the externship.
  • Maintain and restock medical supplies to ensure the hospital's equipment and facilities are well-maintained.
  • Support and participate in the Center's diversity, equity, and inclusion programs to foster a culture of inclusivity and respect.
Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in a veterinary technician program or alternate route track.
  • Worked a minimum of two months in a veterinary hospital or equivalent experience.
  • Provide proof of liability insurance from their school/program.
  • Receiving university credit for their externship.
Work Environment:
  • Work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with outdoor weather conditions and elements daily.
  • Exposure to sharp instruments and needles, as well as risks associated with animal handling.
  • Potential exposure to formalin and allergens.
