Position Overview:
A team member in this role will acquire the fundamental skills necessary for the Driver position, focusing on the precise and timely delivery of goods to diverse customer sites. The Driver Trainee will gain insights into warehouse operations and other functional areas as part of the training process to become a McLane Driver.

Compensation:
  • Annual Pay: Up to $80,000 for qualified candidates based on experience.

Key Responsibilities:
A team member in this position will train alongside a Driver Trainer to develop the skills required to perform the following tasks:
  • Position the tractor to connect the trailer and secure it properly.
  • Operate the truck safely in accordance with all local, state, and federal regulations as well as company policies.
  • Inspect tractor-trailer equipment for any defects before and after trips and submit a DOT inspection report detailing the condition.
  • Utilize the Driver Delivery Handheld (DDH) to document delivery receipts, product temperatures, and any exceptions. Ensure the trailer is loaded securely for safe transport.
  • Accompany and learn from the Driver Trainer on various routes, gaining knowledge of commercial driving regulations and observing essential driving skills.
  • Maintain driver logs (Manual or PeopleNet) in compliance with DOT regulations, documenting delivery receipts, product temperatures, and exceptions.
  • Assist the Driver in unloading the trailer and delivering products to customer locations.
  • Provide excellent customer service by ensuring timely delivery of undamaged products, managing product returns, and issuing valid customer credits.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Possess a Commercial Driver License (CDL Class A) for 6 months or less with a clean driving record.
  • Experience with touch freight is required.
  • Meet eligibility criteria outlined in the McLane Transfer and Promotion Policy.
  • Ability and willingness to select, load, unload, and/or deliver all products ordered by McLane customers.
  • Ability to read and understand labels, instructions, and bills of lading.
  • Capable of performing mathematical calculations to verify product quantities.
  • Effective communication skills with customers, management, and team members.
  • Ability to safely operate a tractor-trailer and utilize a 2-wheeled dolly, ramp, and onboard PeopleNet devices.
Working Environment:
  • The work environment includes various areas of a distribution center, transportation department, shop, and customer facilities.
  • Conditions may involve moderate noise, vehicle vibrations, and extreme weather based on climate.
  • Regular travel is required, including overnight stays.
