Job Title: Controls & Instrument Engineer

The Controls & Instrument Engineer will play a critical role in supporting the Engineering Lead and Product Engineering Manager in the design, construction, and commissioning of large-scale data centers. This position requires a strong understanding of electrical systems, instrumentation, and controls, as well as excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and develop electrical systems, instrumentation, and controls for data center infrastructure modules.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with customer requirements and industrial standards.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including drawings, specifications, and procedures.
  • Participate in design and development planning and review sessions to meet customer and industry needs.
  • Review and approve vendor quotations, technical bid analyses, and procurement documents.
  • Develop and implement control systems, including alarm schedules, control system architecture drawings, and instrument data sheets.
  • Perform ladder logic programming, control valve sizing, relief valve sizing, and flow element sizing.
  • Recommend control systems, control valves, level instruments, and flow instruments best suited for application.
  • Participate in client or internal HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) studies.
  • Assist in providing hookup details to I&E contractors for installation of instrumentation.
  • Review and approve subcontractor field instrument and electrical hookup scope.
  • Prepare bulk MTOs (Material Take-Offs) and detailed BOMs (Bill of Materials).
Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Controls Engineering from a recognized university.
  • Professional Engineering License (Strongly Preferred).
  • A minimum of 7 years' experience in controls and instrument design and engineering, with a focus on data center infrastructure.
  • Ability to produce drawings/sketches to illustrate design/ideas.
  • General knowledge and direct experience with the construction, operation, and maintenance of data center or building electrical systems.
  • Experience with high-density data centers and hyperscale environments.
  • Understanding of industry standards, codes, and regulations, including API, ASME, ANSI, IEC, IBC, ISA, OSHA, NEC, and NFPA.
  • Experience working with computer-aided design (CAD) and building information modeling (BIM) software.
  • Fast track design/build projects and/or multiple significant upgrade projects.
  • Ability to review P&IDs and related control systems for complex process equipment.
  • Working knowledge of control valves, relief valves, and flow measurement devices.
  • Working knowledge of ISA guidelines and symbols for instrumentation.
  • Working knowledge of API and ANSI guidelines.
  • Ability to offer alternate instrument or valve type from perspectives of cost, space, schedule, operation, and maintenance.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical equipment and system design within data center driving or affecting electrical scope.
  • Direct experience in negotiating with regulatory agencies regarding departures from code and ultimately achieving design approval and permitting.
Computer Skills:
  • Mastery knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint).
  • PDF Editor (Adobe, Foxit, or other equivalent).
  • Operational knowledge in SAP (ERP Tool w/ Engineering Modules and Transactions), Solid Works, Autodesk Revit, Autodesk BIM 360, Autodesk AutoCAD, Navisworks Manager / Freedom.
Communication Skills:
  • Express complex ideas effectively in both individual and group situations.
  • Organize and express ideas clearly in written documents.
