Manga Localization Editor

Kodama Tales Inc. is seeking a skilled Manga Localization Editor to join our team. As a key member of our editorial department, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the highest quality and readability of our manga releases for English-speaking audiences.
Key Responsibilities:
- Freelancer Management: Source and recruit skilled freelance translators and letterers to work on various manga titles.
- Project Coordination: Assign translation and lettering projects to freelancers, set deadlines, and ensure timely completion of assignments.
- Quality Assurance: Review and evaluate the work submitted by freelance translators and letterers, ensuring it meets Kodama Tales' standards for accuracy, flow, and readability.
- Editing and Proofreading: Personally review translations, focusing on language flow, tone, and cultural accuracy. Ensure all work is error-free and maintains the spirit of the original Japanese text.
- Progress Reporting & Communication: Regularly report project progress to management, communicating any potential delays or issues in a timely manner to ensure projects remain on schedule.
- Collaboration: Work closely with the production and editorial teams to ensure seamless project workflows and timely delivery of completed manga volumes.
Requirements:
- Professionalism & Attention to Detail: Highly organized, reliable, and meticulous in handling multiple projects. Strong ability to ensure accuracy while maintaining the tone and nuance of the original work, adapting it seamlessly for English-speaking audiences.
- Language Proficiency: Exceptional command of English (native), with strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Japanese bilingualism is a plus, as understanding the original text can greatly enhance the translation and editorial process.
- Translation/Localization Experience: Familiarity with manga translation or localization processes is highly desirable, along with knowledge of Japanese culture and language. Previous experience in the manga industry, particularly in translation and lettering, is a significant advantage.
- Project Management Skills: Demonstrated experience in managing multiple projects, freelancers, and deadlines simultaneously. Ability to coordinate assignments, track progress, and ensure projects are completed on time and to a high standard.
- Communication Skills: Strong ability to communicate effectively with both freelancers and management, especially in providing regular progress updates and reporting any delays or issues.
- Passion for Manga: A deep understanding and love for manga, with a strong sense of storytelling, character development, and flow. Candidates should be fans of the medium and have a keen sense of what resonates with readers.
Work Environment & Schedule:
- Location: This position is primarily remote, but candidates must be based within or near the Los Angeles area and available to come into the office as needed.
- Schedule: Full-time position (40 hours per week). Flexibility is required, as occasional evening meetings or weekend work may be necessary based on project needs.
- Compensation: Compensation will be discussed during the interview process and is based on experience.
- Travel: Candidates must be available to travel to conventions or events as needed.
