Position Overview
The Radiation Therapy Physicist will play a crucial role in providing technical expertise in the design and implementation of treatment facilities, the selection of radiation devices, and the formulation of treatment plans for patients receiving radiation therapy. This position involves overseeing the technical processes related to patient imaging, planning, quality assurance, delivery, and evaluation, while also contributing to clinical research initiatives as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct calibration and quality assurance for treatment machines and ancillary equipment.
  • Execute IMRT/VMAT, SRS/SBRT, and 3-D conformal treatment planning, including patient-specific quality assurance.
  • Oversee treatment planning and quality assurance for brachytherapy and other procedures.
  • Collaborate with physicians to optimize treatment planning and consult with multidisciplinary teams to implement new quality assurance and treatment protocols.
  • Engage in chart reviews and assist with the implementation of electronic medical records.
  • Develop and maintain quality assurance procedures for all treatment devices and methodologies.
  • Support radiation safety programs and fulfill duties as assigned for accelerator radiation safety officer.
  • Assist with shielding calculations and applications for authorization licenses.
  • Participate in educational initiatives for medical physics residents, graduate students, and clinical staff.
  • Facilitate training programs for continuing education in treatment planning and patient case discussions.
  • Provide consultation on equipment selection, implementation, and quality assurance practices.
  • Develop clinical and technical procedures, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), and implement innovative technologies.
  • Perform acceptance testing and commissioning of treatment machines and measurement devices.
  • Supervise the technical activities of dosimetrists and technicians as required.
  • Investigate equipment performance and establish quality control measures to mitigate medical radiation hazards.
  • Maintain accurate electronic medical records and reports, and compile necessary statistics.
  • Assist in regulatory inspections related to accelerators and radioactive materials.
  • Support both clinical and academic missions of the institution.
  • Guide graduate students and residents in medical physics and therapeutic practices.

Qualifications
Education:
A minimum of a Master's degree from a CAMPEP-accredited medical physics program or a PhD in Physics, Engineering, Biosciences, Radiological Sciences, or a related field, with certification from a CAMPEP-accredited program for therapeutic medical physics.

Experience:
Completion of a two-year clinical residency in radiation therapy physics from a CAMPEP-accredited program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Board certification in therapeutic medical physics by the American Board of Radiology or equivalent is expected within three years post-residency.

Skills and Abilities:
Proficiency in 2D x-ray imaging, CT, MRI, and ultrasound, including image fusion techniques. Familiarity with 4D imaging and motion management in treatment planning. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, along with experience in supervising and training others. Knowledge of software development and research experience is advantageous.
