Crisis Intervention Specialist

Position Overview
The Behavioral Health First Responder (BHFR) plays a crucial role in delivering immediate assistance to individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis within the community. Operating under the guidance of management, the BHFR ensures compliance with all operational protocols and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
Direct Care Duties:
- Respond promptly to behavioral health emergencies reported through emergency services.
- Conduct thorough assessments for individuals in crisis.
- Manage crisis situations effectively and safely.
- Provide psycho-educational support, skills training, and crisis counseling in community settings.
- Assist in transporting individuals to safer environments, including appropriate care facilities.
- Facilitate admissions to care facilities or refer individuals to community resources.
- Support fellow first responders (police, fire/rescue, and EMS) during behavioral health emergencies.
- Follow up with individuals post-crisis to ensure their safety and access to necessary treatment and resources.
Administrative Responsibilities:
Complete all required documentation in accordance with RHD, funding sources, and licensing/accreditation standards.
Community Engagement:
- Participate in community involvement and teamwork, including providing referral and case management services for individuals and families during contact.
- Represent the program and RHD at community functions.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in sociology, social work, psychology, gerontology, anthropology, political science, history, criminal justice, theology, nursing, counseling, education, or a related field; OR a High School diploma with 12 semester credits in a human service field and 2 years of relevant experience (1 year in mental health); OR Peer Specialist Certification.
- Valid Driver's License.
- Background checks are mandatory.
- CJIS Certification is required upon hire.
Working Conditions:
This role involves being an emergency first responder, with work conducted in various community settings. Staff must be prepared to work in all weather conditions and may be called upon to assist during city-wide events or emergencies. There is a risk of exposure to communicable diseases and potentially volatile individuals. The position requires the ability to physically assist individuals with limited mobility in and out of agency vehicles. While performing job duties, employees frequently stand, walk, lift, and reach. Willingness to travel as required for the position is essential.
Program Overview:
The Alternative Team, known as the A-Team, is a dedicated behavioral health first responder initiative. The team responds to non-violent behavioral health crises reported to emergency services. Behavioral Health First Responders work collaboratively in pairs to assist individuals and their support systems in resolving crises. This may involve connecting individuals with community services or transporting them to appropriate care facilities. A-Team staff also provide support to other first responders when mental health or substance use issues are present during emergencies.
