Position Summary

The Behavioral Health First Responder (BHFR) plays a crucial role in delivering immediate assistance to individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis within the community. Under the guidance of management, the BHFR ensures compliance with all operational protocols and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Direct Care:

  • Respond promptly to behavioral health emergencies reported through emergency services.
  • Conduct thorough assessments for individuals in crisis.
  • Manage crisis situations effectively and safely.
  • Provide psycho-educational support, skills training, and crisis counseling within the community.
  • Assist in transporting individuals to safer environments, including inpatient care facilities.
  • Facilitate admissions to appropriate care or connect individuals with community resources.
  • Collaborate with other emergency responders during behavioral health crises.
  • Follow up with individuals post-crisis to ensure ongoing safety and access to necessary treatment.

Administrative Duties:

Complete all required documentation in accordance with RHD, funding agencies, and licensing/accreditation standards.

Community Engagement:

  • Participate in community activities and provide referral and case management services to individuals and families during interactions.
  • Represent RHD at community events.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in sociology, social work, psychology, or a related field; or a high school diploma with relevant coursework and experience; or Peer Specialist Certification.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Background checks are mandatory.
  • CJIS Certification is required upon hiring.

Working Conditions:

This role involves responding to emergencies in various community settings. Employees must be prepared to work in all weather conditions and may be called upon during significant events or emergencies. The position carries a risk of exposure to communicable diseases and potentially volatile situations. Employees should be capable of assisting individuals with limited mobility and must be willing to travel as required for the role.

Program Overview:

The Alternative Team, affectionately known as the A-Team, is dedicated to addressing non-violent behavioral health crises. The team operates in pairs to engage with individuals and their support systems to effectively manage crises. This may involve connecting individuals with community services or facilitating transport to appropriate care facilities. A-Team members also provide support to other emergency responders when mental health or substance use issues are present.
