Job Summary

The Activity Specialist I is responsible for planning and implementing recreational and leisure activities for juvenile residents at the Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex. This role requires a strong understanding of youth development and the ability to create engaging programs that promote positive behavioral changes and social skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute specialized educational, vocational, and athletic activities for youth residents, including programs and classes in creative and fine arts, horticulture, music, and sports.
  • Develop and implement intramural activities, leisure-time activities, and skills training, such as board games, card games, and large-muscle workouts.
  • Supervise youth resident workers in the Activity Department and maintain daily youth medical restriction lists.
  • Participate in the Offender Advisory Council and serve as a role model for youth residents, promoting physical well-being, health competition, sportsmanship, and development of healthy leisure skills.
  • Assist youth residents in developing acceptable means to conflict resolution and recognize and report behaviors that impede program progress or threaten security.

Requirements

  • Four years' experience in recreation, athletics, music, or art, with education may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
  • Preferred qualifications include a Bachelor's Degree in Music, Art, Physical Education/Recreation, or sports field, experience working with juvenile youth residents, and experience in the correctional field.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and pass a criminal history records check, DCF Child Abuse and Neglect check, PREA check, TB skin test, and UA Drug Test.
