Lumber Grader/Kiln Operator

Location: De Kalb, TX

Reports to: Yard Lieutenant, Yard Manager

Subordinates: All personnel working on the trading floor

The Lumber Grader/Kiln Operator is responsible for inspecting lumber according to prescribed standards. This involves using knowledge of the company's products to inspect materials for defects, including knots, stains, decay, splits, and defective milling, using visual and mechanical inspection methods.

The Grader must also learn to operate the kiln, assisting the kiln operator when necessary and continuing kiln operation in their absence.

• Knows OSHA requirements for the designated work area and ensures compliance
• Ensures awareness of all known hazards
• Ensures proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), regular inspection, and maintenance by all personnel under the Lumber Grader's supervision
• Grades and tallies lumber, performs moisture tests, and maintains grader equipment
• Monitors production levels and reports to the Yard Manager
• Reads and understands production lists
• Operates equipment safely, demonstrating 'One Right Way' procedures
• Uses calipers to effectively grade lumber
• Works closely with Quality Control and Operations on lumber quality
• Keeps the lumber area and lumberyard well-organized, including lifting, carrying, and stacking different types and sizes of material

• All hiring decisions are contingent on passing a background check and drug screenings
• Grading experience preferred, but on-the-job training is an option
• Completion of in-house grading training
• Understanding of all lumber grades and defects
• Understanding of grade rule material
• Good computer and mechanical troubleshooting skills
• Understanding of SPIB & NHLA grading rules or equivalent
• Safety-sensitive position requiring ability to lift up to 50lbs, walking, stairs, pushing, pulling, repetitive motion, kneeling, squatting, and balancing, exposure to loud noises and dust
• Maintaining good working relationships with other employees
• Maintaining open communication with the Yard Manager and Yard Lieutenant
