JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:


The Steady Thermal Aero Research Turbine (START) Lab within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University is looking to hire a qualified Research Engineer to support all facets of the daily operations of a sophisticated research facility.

The primary focus areas for START include enhancing turbine efficiencies through advanced turbine airfoil cooling, optimizing seals between rotating and stationary components, and the utilization and evaluation of additive manufactured parts.


With substantial backing from Penn State, a leading gas turbine manufacturer, and federal government entities, the Department of Mechanical Engineering has established a unique facility that accommodates two 1,500 horsepower compressors along with various other intricate systems necessary for turbine testing.

Additional information about the START Lab can be found on their website. Furthermore, over the next few years, the START Lab is initiating a significant facility upgrade to incorporate a second test turbine, referred to as START+.

Key Responsibilities:
- Overseeing industry and federal multi-year projects, including facility enhancements.
- Engaging with both sponsors and vendors regarding project statuses.
- Procuring necessary supplies and equipment.
- Managing the outsourcing of both labor and equipment.
- Preparing comprehensive budget and schedule documentation.


Providing assistance with the fabrication of research hardware and maintenance of measurement instruments, which necessitates the ability to collaborate effectively in a diverse environment with students and research sponsors through strong teamwork.


Qualifications:


This position will be filled at either the Advanced Professional or Senior Professional level, contingent upon the successful candidate's experience and education.

The Advanced Professional level requires a bachelor's degree in an engineering or science discipline along with 3 years of relevant experience. Additional experience is necessary for a higher-level position.

Essential skills include exceptional organizational and communication abilities, as well as proficiency in project management tools.

Additional Information:
This is a limited-term appointment, funded for 3 years from the date of hire, with a strong possibility of renewal. The working location for this position is fully on-site.

The salary range for this position, encompassing all possible grades, is between $86,000 and $164,000.00.
