Job Summary

The Geotechnical Engineering Intern will work collaboratively with the responsible geotechnical engineer as part of the Burns & McDonnell Geotechnical Department. This role will support and assist in completing requests for engineering-related services by the Geotechnical Department.

  • Assist in the geotechnical design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion as directed by the responsible geotechnical engineer.
  • Assist with research and compile project-related data (geotechnical data, boring logs, subsurface profiles) as directed by the responsible geotechnical engineer.
  • Assist with planning subsurface explorations and laboratory testing programs as the responsible geotechnical engineer directs.
  • Apply basic knowledge of commonly used geotechnical engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the geotechnical engineering services industry.
  • Assist with tasks that may include filing, scanning, data entry, documentation, Power Point presentation.
  • Assist with responses to general questions.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts by collecting and analyzing data.
  • Present solutions to concerns.
  • Research solutions to project concerns; analyze and recommend solutions to problems.
  • Assist with ad hoc projects as assigned by managers.
  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
  • Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Pursuit of Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering related degree from an accredited program.
  • Pursuit of Master's degree in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering from an accredited program strongly preferred.
  • Currently enrolled, and in good standing, in a post-secondary education and/or technical certificate program in a field related to the work done in the department.
  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
  • Involvement on campus or in the community.
  • Basic knowledge in standard geotechnical engineering techniques, principles and procedures. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Basic computer skills include Geotechnical analysis programs preferred (e.g., Ensoft, FAD) and AutoCAD.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
