Job Summary

MD Anderson Cancer Center is seeking a Per Diem Medical Imaging Technologist to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing mammography imaging exams on patients with a mammogram exam ordered by a physician.

Key Responsibilities

Function within professional scope of practice to provide high-quality care while working in a dynamic, complex team-oriented, highly productive patient care environment.

Image patients utilizing approved protocols/procedures and bring questions forward before imaging patients.

Demonstrate the ability to address and handle patient care concerns or other problems by utilizing critical thinking to analyze and evaluate cause-and-effect outcomes and effectively implement solutions. Correct problems as they arise and notify supervisor/manager when assistance is required to do so.

Ensure that patient studies are reviewed for accuracy, coded, and charged appropriately.

Demonstrate the ability to address and handle patient care concerns, notify the radiologist if gross pathological findings are discovered.

Responsible for quality assurance activities on technical equipment and collaborate with appropriate parties to resolve image quality issues.

Communicate professionally, effectively, and in a timely manner with all patient care providers, patients, and guests. Practice responsible use of communication tools (status board, paging systems, telephones, email, fax, etc.).

Technical accuracy: imaging studies are appropriately imaged, and error rates are minimized to appropriate established levels.

Responsible for in-depth knowledge of all routine section-specific protocols/procedures. Able to perform specialized procedures/protocols with limited assistance.

Accurately enter data into systems (i.e., PACS, equipment systems, electronic medical record, and other computer systems).

Patient Care and Safety

Ensure all patients are provided care in a safe environment, free of hazards. Provide full attention to the patient and the procedure.

Demonstrate knowledge of Age-Specific Criteria in carrying out work duties and tasks.

Correctly identify patients using approved identifiers.

Implement all safety and fall precautions and communicate needs with team members through effective methods. Recognize patient distress signs, initiate, and follow emergency procedures: nurse/physician, DIURT, CODE. Document incidents, variances, unusual circumstances, or patient concerns and notify appropriate personnel as needed.

Properly administer contrast agents, utilize sterile or aseptic technique where applicable. Review medications and allergies. Follow the five rights of drug administration.

Ensure work areas and equipment are safe, clean, organized, and appropriate supplies are available for procedures and checklists are completed (includes emergency supplies).

During system failure, perform downtime procedures and immediately report to supervisor for reassignment of duties.

Relay all equipment malfunctions to the DI Engineering Team, supervisor, and manager with appropriate information readily available.

Protect patients from ionizing radiation by following ALARA and Image Gently radiation safety guidelines, providing lead shielding when applicable, and by monitoring technical scanning parameters.

Service, Productivity, and Efficiency

Exhibit and maintain a high level of professionalism and customer service at all times. Respectful and professional at all times when interacting with patients and guests, staff, and faculty.

Maintain high productivity levels. Actively seek opportunities to assist in overall patient care activities in the department. This may include escorting patients from holding areas to scanner, offering to work over when needed, assisting peers and nursing staff.

Effectively manage patient flow and minimize delays by utilizing critical thinking to analyze and evaluate cause-and-effect outcomes and effectively implement solutions. Demonstrate flexibility and the ability to work effectively and efficiently.

Ensure completion of all duties and conduct daily verbal hand-off communication to relief technologist at shift end.

All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Graduate of an accredited Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) program.

None required experience.

Must have one of the following combinations, including Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification: Registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) and licensure by the Texas Medical Board (TMB) as a Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist (CMRT). Certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB) and licensure by the Texas Medical Board (TMB) as a Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist (CMRT). Registration by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
