The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is seeking a dedicated Patient Care Technician to join our Orthopedics, Trauma, Spine Unit (3RC) within the Medical Surgical Services (MSS) Division.

This is a 48-bed adult surgical unit focusing on the care of orthopedics, trauma, and spine patients. Our staff is passionate about providing high-quality patient-centered care and is committed to achieving maximum quality of life for our patients.

The successful candidate will be responsible for performing specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses. This includes independently obtaining and recording vital signs, carrying out medical asepsis, and performing simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Independently obtaining and recording vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
  • Carrying out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks, including phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, and Foley catheter removal.
  • Performing simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, and applying binders and braces.
  • Assisting with patient admission, transfers, and discharges.
  • Providing for patients' personal hygiene and comfort.
  • Turning, positioning, and ambulating patients.
  • Transporting patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies.
  • Feeding patients, serving drinking water and nourishments, and recording patients' intake.
  • Assisting patients with bedpans and urinals and recording output.
  • Participating in nursing care conferences and reporting pertinent patient information and incidents to the nurse in charge.
  • Providing for patient comfort measures through social interactions.
  • Sharing responsibility for preparation, proper use, and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of the unit.
