POSITION OVERVIEW
- Accountable for delivering direct nursing services to clients, while overseeing the daily nursing operations carried out by nursing aides. This oversight must align with prevailing Federal, State, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations, as well as facility protocols. The goal is to uphold the highest quality of care consistently.
REQUIREMENTS
- Must hold a current, unencumbered license to practice as a RN or LPN in the State of Illinois and/or Wisconsin.
- Must have a valid CPR certification or be willing to obtain certification within two weeks of employment.
- Must possess knowledge of nursing and medical practices and procedures.
- Demonstrates interest and/or expertise in geriatric care.
- Must be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking the English language in a clear manner.
- Must be capable of making independent decisions when necessary.
- Must exhibit tactfulness when interacting with clients, family members, visitors, staff, government agencies, and the general public.
- Must demonstrate leadership and supervisory skills and a willingness to collaborate effectively with other staff members.
- Must be personable, enthusiastic, and resourceful.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
- Must be able to manage the mental and emotional challenges of the role.
- Must possess adequate sight/hearing abilities or utilize prosthetics to ensure these senses function properly to meet the job requirements.
- Must work independently, exhibit flexibility, maintain personal integrity, and collaborate effectively with clients, family members, staff, and support agencies.
- Must be in good overall health and demonstrate emotional stability.
- Must be able to relate to and work with individuals who are ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally distressed, and occasionally hostile.
- May be required to lift, push, pull, and move equipment, supplies, and clients weighing over fifty (50) pounds throughout the day.
- May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, and conditions, including exposure to HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Accepts and supports directives from appropriate authorities, which may involve different units, clients, workloads, and various tasks as assigned.
- Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the care team for a specific unit.
- Ensure adherence to all nursing procedures and protocols as per established policies.
- Directly supervise and educate the nursing staff on various topics to enhance job knowledge.
- Ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures, including appropriate dress code.
- Assist in creating a written care plan for each client that identifies their needs and concerns.
- Participate actively in client care plan conferences as directed.
- Report any concerns or complaints made by clients or their families to the Administrator.
- Provide guidance and discipline to nursing staff as needed.
- Conduct daily rounds to ensure nursing staff fulfill their responsibilities and follow appropriate procedures. Make physical rounds to all clients daily and accompany physicians as necessary.
- Foster an environment of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, while maintaining a calm atmosphere throughout the department.
- Engage in continuing education programs.
- Recommend equipment and supply needs to the Director of Nursing.
- Order medications and treatments as necessary, adhering to established budgetary guidelines.
- Utilize the PCC 24-hour summary to address recommendations and concerns related to client care needs.
- Complete detailed accident/incident reports.
- Encourage attending physicians to review treatment plans and ensure their orders and progress notes are recorded in accordance with established policies.
- Document nursing notes in a comprehensive and descriptive manner that reflects the care provided and the client's response.
- Complete required assessments upon client admission, transfer, and/or discharge.
- Receive and record telephone orders from physicians accurately.
- Document new or modified diet orders and communicate this information to the Dietary Department.
- Perform routine charting duties as required and in accordance with established Charting and Documentation Policies and Procedures.
- Ensure the completion of admission, discharge, and transfer processes.
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by the physician.
- Review medication records for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to stop order policies.
- Provide professional services such as catheterization, tube feedings, suctioning, dressing changes, and care for the deceased as required.
- Participate in orienting new clients and their families to the facility.
- Coordinate diagnostic and therapeutic services as ordered by the physician.
- Notify the attending physician and family of any changes in the client's condition.
- Obtain sputum, urine, and other lab tests as ordered.
- Record vital signs as necessary.
- Contact the physician for nursing assessments, medication orders, incident reports, abnormal lab results, and any other pertinent information regarding client care.
- Ensure nursing notes and monthly summaries accurately reflect the care plan and compliance.
- Attend staff meetings as directed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
