Job Overview:
- The Automation Engineer will oversee the transition of assays and processes from manual setups to automated liquid handling systems and integrated platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and program intricate processes on liquid handling systems, managing all phases from requirements gathering to hands-on development and testing.
- Establish requirements and specifications for internal stakeholders and collaborate with vendors to design and configure systems that fulfill those requirements.
- Work collaboratively with cross-functional project teams (scientists, managers, IT, facilities) essential for the successful implementation of large systems and associated infrastructure.
- Provide mentorship and technical support to new users.
- Oversee multiple systems in core laboratory environments: establish best practices, proactively monitor system performance, and address errors and urgent requests promptly.
- Lead troubleshooting efforts, conduct root cause analysis, and resolve complex automation challenges.
- Strive to minimize equipment downtime in the laboratory.
- Continuously evaluate operational conditions and prioritize enhancements based on anticipated improvements.
- Implement systematic approaches to automation solutions to ensure process scalability, sustainability, and reliability.
- Design and develop new, automated, and efficient laboratory processes, aiming for hands-free test processing.
- Conduct audits across multiple systems for quality assurance (Automated equipment, incident tracking, and documentation).
Qualifications:
Education:
- BS/MS in a scientific or engineering discipline
Skills and Competencies:
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving capabilities and adaptability to change.
- In-depth knowledge and extensive hands-on experience with various liquid handling systems (e.g., Hamilton Vantage, Tecan EVO, Agilent Bravo, or similar platforms).
- Proficiency in any major programming language (e.g., C#.NET, Python).
- Training in Venus Software Basic and Advanced.
- Training in Venus Liquid Handling.
- Experience with Venus over Vantage method development (preferred but not required).
- Familiarity with Hamilton Liquid Verification (LVK) (preferred but not required).
Experience:
- Prior experience in assay development; liquid handling performance qualification, biological assay optimization, and inter-intra-assay performance validation.
- Expertise in protocol development and operation of integrated systems and automation scheduling software applications.
- Developed documentation for process development, including IQOQPQ, Study Test Plans, Change Management, Method Requirements, Method Specifications, and Design Input Requirements.
- Collaborated with service engineers on instrument diagnostics and repairs.
- Experience in standard life-science application areas: microbiology, molecular biology, and high-throughput diagnostic testing.
