Charlottesville, Virginia, United States Commonwealth of Virginia Full time

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated Research Scientist specializing in Computational and Functional Genomics. This role involves leveraging expertise in molecular biology or genetics to conduct functional genomic analyses aimed at understanding inherited vascular disorders and cardiomyopathies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Enhance scalable single-nucleus and spatial genomic technologies applicable to both fresh and archived human biospecimens.
  • Implement targeted and systematic genome engineering strategies to modify candidate regulatory elements or genes within relevant cellular models.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to create and refine phenotypic screening processes for genetic and drug interventions.
  • Engage in bioinformatics and computational projects through partnerships with various internal and external collaborators.

The selected candidate will have access to state-of-the-art laboratory and computational resources, fostering a dynamic and inclusive atmosphere within the Center for Public Health Genomics (CPHG). This position encourages collaboration with other CPHG laboratories to expand training in both laboratory and computational biology.

Qualifications:

Required: A doctoral degree or a master’s degree accompanied by substantial experience in a relevant field.

Preferred:

  • PhD in life sciences (e.g., molecular biology, genetics, or a related discipline).
  • Comprehensive understanding of biomedical sciences, human physiology, disease mechanisms, and cellular biology.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.
  • Experience in human genetics or functional genomics is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics or computational biology is a plus but not mandatory.

Physical Requirements:

This role may involve prolonged periods of standing and squatting during experimental procedures, as well as tasks requiring fine motor skills for laboratory work.

This is a full-time position with a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Commonwealth of Virginia is committed to fostering a diverse workforce and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.

Application Process:

Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their application, including a CV, cover letter, and contact information for three references. All documents should be uploaded into the designated submission field.

The Commonwealth of Virginia values diversity and is an equal opportunity employer, ensuring that all qualified applicants receive consideration for employment without discrimination.
