JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE

The Manufacturing Operations Supervisor plays a crucial role in assisting the General Manager with the strategic planning, organization, and management of manufacturing processes. This position ensures the efficient and safe production of high-quality steel freight car and locomotive wheels, aligning with sales demands while optimizing costs.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Ensure adherence to quality standards and productivity goals.
  2. Maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety protocols.
  3. Oversee operations to remain within budgetary constraints while driving continuous improvement initiatives.
  4. Support the General Manager in planning and directing manufacturing activities, acting in their stead when necessary.
  5. Organize and allocate manpower effectively to meet production targets.
  6. Address employee concerns to foster positive relations and equitable resolutions.
  7. Recruit, develop, and inspire a skilled supervisory team to guarantee a safe and efficient production environment.

JOB KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  1. A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Business, or a related discipline; 5-7 years of leadership experience in a manufacturing setting with a focus on continuous improvement is preferred.
  2. Proven ability to make impactful decisions in a dynamic environment.
  3. Proficient in utilizing computer applications and Microsoft Office Suite.
  4. Strong understanding of financial and operational processes.
  5. Ability to nurture and mentor talent within the organization.
  6. Demonstrated skills in change management.

KEY CHALLENGES

This role involves significant collaboration with various departments, including the Union committee for communication and grievance resolution, Human Resources for employee relations, and the Plant Controller for cost analysis. Interaction with the Lean Manager to promote Lean manufacturing principles, as well as engagement with the Purchasing Department and vendors, is essential. The effectiveness of this position is evaluated based on the timely, safe, and cost-efficient production of steel wheels to fulfill market demands. A comprehensive understanding of manufacturing processes and the ability to lead a team of hourly employees are vital for success in this role.
