Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Public Interest Attorney to join our team at South Texas College of Law Houston. The ideal candidate will have experience in Bankruptcy Law and debtor rights, with a strong passion for public interest law and clinical legal education.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide legal services to clients in bankruptcy and debtor relief cases, including representation in Federal and local courts.
  • Supervise and mentor student interns and staff in the performance of their duties, including client interviewing and counseling, factual investigation, and document drafting.
  • Develop and implement legal education programs to enhance the skills of clinic staff and educate the community on bankruptcy and debtor rights.
  • Assist with client intake, screening, and document gathering, as well as setting appointments and managing cases.
  • Represent the Clinics at partnership or collaborative meetings and utilize case management and data aggregation software to maintain program reports and track client data.
Requirements
  • Licensed to practice law in any state or territory of the United States.
  • Two (2) years of legal experience or more, with a strong background in Bankruptcy Law and debtor rights.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with cultural competency, to all levels of constituencies.
  • High level of business and professional ethics, with a flexible and adaptive approach to meeting the needs of the Clinics' client base.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with reliable transportation and minimum computer and technology skills required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Licensed to practice law in Texas.
  • Licensed to practice in Federal Bankruptcy court.
  • Prior public interest or volunteer experience serving low-income persons.
  • Language proficiency other than English.
  • Prior experience in teaching, training, or mentoring others.
  • Experience with case management software.
