Position Overview

We are seeking a qualified Lead Sustainability Engineer to join our Sustainability & Resilience Practice. The ideal candidate will possess a strong interest in climate hazard research and analysis, experience in hydrological and coastal modeling, as well as expertise in stormwater management and flood mitigation design. A proactive approach to learning new analytical methods and techniques is essential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Engage in resilience projects that encompass multi-climate hazard analysis and risk mitigation design for master plans, campuses, and both new and existing structures.
  • Conduct research and analysis of contemporary climate and resilience-related academic and scientific literature.
  • Analyze local and national baseline building code requirements concerning various climate and earth hazards, along with future climate change projections.
  • Perform on-site surveys, inspections, and investigations, including visual assessments of existing conditions, documentation of observations, and photographic records.
  • Execute hydrological analysis, 2D stormwater simulations, and design stormwater management systems.
  • Review existing project drawings, specifications, and related documentation.
  • Prepare contract documents and develop detailed designs using AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Compile technical reports and presentations summarizing climate hazard assessments and mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other Thornton Tomasetti practices, including Structures, Facades, Renewal, Transportation, Protective Design & Security, and Applied Science.
  • Assist with project administration and proposal writing as needed.
  • Coordinate design efforts with in-house teams and external project consultants, including architects and various engineering disciplines, cost consultants, and contractors.
  • Prepare and analyze data for modeling purposes.
  • Conduct modeling studies focusing on urban flooding, stormwater networks, coastal and riverine flooding, and wave action.
  • Prepare documentation for FEMA and local floodplain requirements.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with mapping tools such as ArcGIS Pro is advantageous.
  • Experience with HydroCAD or similar hydrological and coastal analysis tools is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Python or comparable programming languages is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of flood mitigation design (utilizing ASCE24, ASCE7), climate hazard analysis, and multi-disciplinary coordination is a plus.
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, SketchUp, and Photoshop is desirable.
  • Familiarity with 3D modeling tools such as Rhino and Grasshopper is a plus.
  • Experience with modeling software including SWMM5, HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS 1D & 2D, Mike+, and Hazus is preferred.
  • Experience with compound flood modeling involving coastal storm surge and pluvial flooding is an advantage.
Compensation
The compensation for this role typically ranges from $84,000 to $94,500 annually. This range is a good faith estimate based on what a successful candidate might earn. Actual pay rates may vary based on various factors, including operational needs, individual qualifications, and experience.
