Job Description

The Salvation Army Central Territory is seeking a dedicated and passionate individual to fill the role of Youth Development Specialist - Spark Academy. This position is responsible for planning and managing the Spark Academy Program for 3rd-5th graders, providing a safe and engaging environment for young people to grow and develop.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and monitor educational, recreational, relational, and spiritual development activities, events, and trips.
  • Provide Christian leadership to the youth, encouraging their spiritual development and fostering a love for God and their neighbors.
  • Serve as an intentional mentor and role model, sharing meals and fellowship time with the youth.
  • Assist with recruiting and training volunteers, ensuring a strong support system for the program.
  • Record and maintain statistical information, data records, and daily attendance of Spark Academy participants.
  • Plan, create, and implement engaging activities, teaching observations, and reporting, while setting up and cleaning up after events.
  • Participate actively in all staff meetings and trainings, staying up-to-date on best practices and program developments.
  • Maintain confidentiality, proper client boundaries, and comply with Safe from Harm guidelines, ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all.
  • Work closely with the Spark Academy program manager, intake specialist, and case manager to maintain active enrollment and ensure program success.
  • Maintain a positive, professional work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with everyone.
  • Create an environment where young people feel safe, supported, and encouraged to grow and develop.
Qualifications
  • Associate degree with an emphasis in youth development, preferred. A minimum of two years' experience in the youth development field is required.
  • A person with spiritual authority and a role model for young people, demonstrating a strong commitment to Christian values and principles.
  • Proficient in Microsoft programs, including Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, with the ability to develop flyers and other related materials for the Spark Academy program.
  • A valid driver's license, with the ability to meet the guidelines provided by the State of residence and the automobile insurance provider as pertaining to passenger vans/buses.
Skills
  • Knowledge of Christian theology and the Salvation Army mission, with a strong understanding of its philosophy and doctrine.
  • Credentials and experience in youth development and trauma-informed training, with the ability to use PC hardware and approved Microsoft programs.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English in a manner that is sufficient for consultation with supervisors, employees, parents, and youth, and perform the requirements of this job.
Physical and Working Conditions

This role requires the ability to perform the above essential duties, with frequent walking tours of communities, school sites, and worksites. May be required to lift up to 15 pounds and assist with picking up supplies and resources for the Spark Academy program.
