Healthcare Application Specialist (Mid-level, Senior)

Position Overview:
The Senior Healthcare Application Specialist is tasked with enhancing, supporting, and maintaining applications within the UPHS health system.

Key responsibilities include providing guidance on various technical subjects to team members, overseeing application projects throughout their lifecycle while adhering to project timelines and objectives.

Coordinating the development of new features, testing and implementing scheduled vendor updates and system enhancements, and resolving system issues.

Act as a resource for fellow application team members on both technical and functional application analysis, defining system requirements, and creating logical data models using industry best practices for build and configuration, maintenance, and data integrity.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams and UPHS clients by offering education on system functionalities and configuring new tools to enhance end-user productivity within the application.

Ensure that system modifications comply with change management protocols, maintain comprehensive documentation for all assigned applications, and develop, plan, and execute testing for supported applications.

Communicate all necessary application changes, enhancements, and procedures to relevant internal department teams.

Key Responsibilities:
Engage in application projects by establishing clear goals and objectives and completing tasks in a timely manner.

Manage project plans, monitor tasks and milestones, and report project status to the Lead Application Specialist.


Collaborate with the Lead Application Specialist to formulate new policies and procedures related to system design, enhancements, change control, and application maintenance.


Participate in training for new hires, mentoring, and instructing on internal processes while educating application specialists on various projects, including testing, documentation, and configuration within the application.

Analyze and interpret complex workflow/system requirements to design, configure, test, and implement application solutions.

Define system requirements and develop logical data models using best practices for build and configuration, maintenance, and data integrity.


Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for assigned applications to establish standards for configuration and enhancements.


Develop and execute thorough test plans that encompass application functionality changes and/or enhancements to ensure successful outcomes.

Participate in system upgrades and scheduled vendor releases as necessary to enhance the application and achieve project goals.


Work with the Lead Application Specialist to create departmental standards regarding change control to ensure accurate data tracking and monitor the change process by maintaining current protocols and reporting any issues to the appropriate personnel.

Independently manage complex projects, completing them within designated timeframes and with minimal supervision.

Provide ongoing support and maintenance as assigned.

Perform duties in alignment with Penn Medicine and entity values, policies, and procedures.

Other responsibilities as assigned to support the unit, department, entity, and health system organization.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree (Required).

3+ years of relevant experience (Required).

Experience in healthcare IT (Preferred).

Skills and Abilities:
Demonstrated customer service skills.

Effective communication skills with all levels of staff.

Ability to implement process improvements.

Proficient in troubleshooting, researching, and resolving technically challenging issues involving integrated systems.

Must be able to work collaboratively as part of a team while providing high-quality service to clients.

Demonstrated project management skills - preferred.

Strong quantitative and analytical abilities - preferred.

Ability to assist with basic hardware configurations, database management tools, and query languages - preferred.

Experience in application support or implementation roles - preferred.


Knowledge of healthcare operations and data structures, as well as the use of information system applications in a healthcare environment - preferred.


Healthcare Application Specialist:
