Petroleum Engineering Technician

The Petroleum Engineering Technician (PET) performs inspections of oil and gas operations and enforces all appropriate laws, rules, and regulations as well as the terms and conditions specified in the various approvals.
Responsibilities include:
- Performing on-site compliance inspections for all phases of oil and gas operations, specifically drilling and work-over, production, environmental, and plugging and abandonment.
- Preparing documentation after compliance inspection(s) are complete and issuing Written Orders and Incidents of Non-Compliance (INC) when problems or violations are noted during inspection(s).
- Completing follow-up inspections to determine if compliance was met by operators and recommending further action as necessary.
- Requiring a considerable amount of mathematics at the high school algebra level to verify volumes of drilling fluids and oil/gas volumes to account for production from federal oil and gas leases.
- Being able to safely operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle on unimproved roads and two-tracks to access remote oil and gas facilities.
Requirements:
- Specialized Experience: Examples of qualifying specialized experience include technical work in drafting, surveying, construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems.
- Education: One year of graduate education directly related to the work of this position (i.e., major study in petroleum engineering or a related field).
Physical Demands:
- On-site inspection work requires almost continuous physical activity, including walking, standing, crouching, and climbing.
- The PET may be required to hike into unusually rugged areas to inspect abandoned sites.
- PETs are subject to call 24 hours a day and may be required to work long non-stop tours-of-duty, occasionally in excess of thirty (30) hours.
Work Environment:
- Much of the work is at field locations where it is necessary to wear appropriate safety equipment.
- The incumbent must walk under and around heavy derrick and hoisting equipment and piping and around other potentially hazardous operating equipment.
- Work involves climbing up and down ladders and steep stairways.
