Job Title: Histotechnician/Senior Histotechnician

UPMC is seeking a skilled Histotechnician/Senior Histotechnician to join our team in the Histology Laboratory. This is a full-time position working Monday through Friday, 8-hour varying day shifts with no on-call, weekend, or holiday responsibility.

Job Summary:

We are looking for a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to process and prepare specialized tissue samples in a clinical laboratory setting. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, be able to work independently, and demonstrate a strong commitment to quality and patient safety.

Responsibilities:
  • Process and prepare surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining, and cover slipping.
  • Embed and cut specialized tissue based on location, including minute biopsy protocols.
  • Perform quality control checks at each phase of processing and staining.
  • Maintain instruments according to quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols.
  • Accurately prepare slides for microtomy using the barcode label to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.
  • Perform ancillary or miscellaneous tasks such as filing, cleaning, and stocking supplies.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnician program within the last 5 years or an Associate's degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.
  • 1 year of clinical laboratory experience post-training is preferred for Histotechnician and 3 years of clinical laboratory experience post-training is required for Senior Histotechnician.
  • Am Society Clinical Pathology Histology Technician (HT) certification from ASCP is required within 1 year of hire.
