Position Overview

UNM Medical Group, Inc. is seeking a Forensic Pathologist Staff Physician to enhance our School of Medicine division. This role is a PRN opportunity based in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Role Summary

Under minimal supervision, the physician will deliver and oversee direct healthcare services for a designated patient demographic.

Essential Qualifications for a Forensic Pathologist Staff Physician:

A medical degree with 3 to 5 years of relevant experience, which may encompass residency in a related medical specialty. Possession of State of New Mexico and Federal DEA Certification; Medical Specialty License or Certification; Board Certified or Board Eligible in the pertinent medical specialty. Verification of educational credentials and licensure (if applicable) will be required upon selection.

Key Responsibilities of a Forensic Pathologist Staff Physician:

  • Ability to observe, evaluate, and document symptoms, reactions, and patient progress.
  • Capability to supervise, mentor, and instruct clinical professionals and/or students in the area of expertise.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current principles, methods, and procedures for delivering medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment in the specialty.
  • Understanding of legal and ethical standards governing medical care delivery.
  • Familiarity with relevant pharmaceuticals and non-pharmaceutical patient care aids, along with the ability to prescribe dosages and guide patients in their proper use.
  • Awareness of community medical diagnostic and patient care services in the relevant medical field.
  • Commitment to maintaining quality, safety, and infection control standards.
  • Ability to design and present educational programs and workshops.
  • Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.
  • Ability to function both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

About the Forensic Pathology Division within UNM School of Medicine:

As a nationally accredited program with a strong educational component at The University of New Mexico School of Medicine, the Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) examines any death occurring across the state of New Mexico that is sudden, violent, untimely, unexpected, or where a person is found deceased and the cause of death remains unknown. The OMI, a specialized program within the Department of Pathology, establishes the cause and manner of death in these instances and provides formal death certification.

OMI is currently in search of Forensic Pathologists to enhance our division. Our ideal candidate will possess board certification as a forensic pathologist and be licensed in the State of New Mexico to conduct complex external examinations and comprehensive autopsies. At OMI, we utilize CT scans for case evaluations and seek a candidate familiar with this diagnostic technique. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a high level of professionalism and be capable of completing cases in accordance with NAME accreditation standards. Familiarity with providing court testimony and depositions is preferred. On-call hours will be part of the role.
