JOB OVERVIEW

The Network Protection Engineer operates within the Technology Infrastructure Division of the Information Technology Department and reports to the Information Technology Business Systems Manager. This position is tasked with overseeing and maintaining the firewall infrastructure for the City of Oklahoma City, ensuring the network is safeguarded against external threats while implementing security policies and best practices. The role is critical for protecting sensitive information, preventing unauthorized access, and addressing security vulnerabilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Install, configure, and maintain firewall hardware and software solutions, including next-generation firewalls (NGFW), to secure the organization's network.
  • Develop and enforce firewall security policies, rules, and access controls to protect sensitive information and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Monitor network traffic for unusual activities, security breaches, and vulnerabilities using intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPS).
  • Respond to security incidents and breaches in a timely manner, investigate root causes, and implement corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
  • Analyze firewall logs and produce reports to identify security threats, trends, and potential vulnerabilities.
  • Manage user access and permissions through the configuration of VPNs, ACLs, and other access control mechanisms.
  • Keep firewall hardware and software updated by applying patches and security updates.
  • Implement network segmentation to protect critical assets and limit lateral movement in case of a breach.
  • Optimize firewall performance to ensure it does not negatively impact network speed or latency.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of firewall configurations, policies, and network diagrams for reference and auditing.
  • Collaborate with other IT teams, including network engineers, system administrators, and security analysts, to ensure a secure network environment.
  • Provide training and guidance to employees and IT staff on firewall security best practices.
  • Regularly monitor usage, perform maintenance, and troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Stay informed about compliance changes to ensure all requirements are met.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience in firewall administration and five (5) years in Information Technology.
  • Possession of relevant industry certifications, such as Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), or Certified Firewall Administrator (CFA).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Expertise in firewall administration, network security, and intrusion detection/prevention systems.
  • Familiarity with various firewall technologies, VPNs, and network monitoring tools.
  • Understanding of network protocols, routing, and switching.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and address security threats.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt to evolving security challenges.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Primarily indoor work in a climate-controlled setting.
  • Occasional local or out-of-town travel may be required.
  • May need to work beyond regular hours for unplanned outages or project deadlines.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to read and interpret information on a video display terminal.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Manual dexterity to operate computer equipment.
