Permanent Educational Support Specialist

Under the guidance of the certified classroom educator and/or school administration, ESS educational support specialists enhance student learning, assisting all students in reaching the objectives established by their school districts, as well as state and national standards. ESS educational support specialists carry out a variety of instructional and administrative responsibilities, often providing additional assistance to students with special needs and disabilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Engage in the execution of each student's educational plan as detailed in their IEPs and in accordance with the classroom schedule and routine
  • Serve as a communication link between teachers and other district staff regarding the ongoing requirements of individual students
  • Offer guidance and potential solutions to educators and support staff regarding classroom-related matters
  • Maintain records concerning students, including their needs, strengths, progress, and challenges
  • Implement behavior support strategies as directed by the teacher or behavior support personnel
  • Accompany students to lunch in the cafeteria, gymnasium, music classroom, and auditorium for scheduled activities
  • Oversee and assist students during meal times, gym activities, outdoor recess, and field trips as necessary
  • Support students in inclusive regular education classes, aiding with modifications as instructed by the teachers
  • Supervise students during boarding and disembarking from school transportation, as required
  • Participate in meetings to develop and revise IEPs and Evaluation Reports, as needed
  • Attend training sessions, workshops, and enhance skills as necessary
  • Assist students with daily living activities and personal care skills, including physical positioning and mobility support for students with physical challenges
  • Help with administrative tasks as directed, such as recording grades, setting up equipment, and preparing instructional materials
  • Foster a safe and organized classroom environment; take all reasonable precautions to safeguard students, facilities, and materials
  • Exhibit cooperation and adaptability in performing other related duties as assigned by school administration and ESS
  • Comprehend and comply with all ESS and district policies and procedures
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 48 college credits or Para Educator Certification OR obtaining Para Educator Certification within one year of employment
  • Pennsylvania State Police Clearance for employment
  • Child Abuse Clearance for employment
  • FBI Fingerprinting
  • School Health Form: Physical and Tuberculosis Test
  • Pennsylvania Department of Education Form 6004: Arrest/Conviction Report and Certification
  • Act 126/Mandated Reporter training
  • CPR, CPI, and First Aid Certification preferred
