The Tax Division of the Employment Development Department (EDD) has an immediate opening for one (1) Tax Auditor position within the Oakland Audit Crew 2 in the Field Audit and Compliance Division's Bay Area Audit Office.
Join one of the largest tax collection agencies in the United States. The EDD is tasked with conducting employment tax audits and investigations of businesses operating in California. Additionally, the EDD educates employers through free seminars and outreach initiatives.
As an EDD auditor, your daily responsibilities will include performing in-person audits and collaborating closely with business owners and their representatives. You will analyze employer records to reconcile payroll taxes, ascertain proper classification of workers as employees or independent contractors, and ensure accurate reporting of payments. Auditors are also responsible for drafting audit reports and discussing findings with the responsible parties of the business. Your role as an auditor is vital in ensuring that workers receive the benefits they are entitled to under the law and in promoting equitable business practices.

This position is based in Oakland, CA and may qualify for telework under EDD's telework policy. California Government Code Section 14200 mandates that employees reside in California to telecommute. A DAY IN THE LIFE - PREPARE TO THINK BIG, WORK SMART, AND EXCEL
As a Field Tax Auditor, you will:
Receive both on-the-job and formal training. Conduct in-person payroll tax audits and investigations for California-based enterprises. Learn, adhere to, and apply the provisions of the California Unemployment Insurance Code, California Code of Regulations, Title 22, California Labor Code, and California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board decisions. Engage with business owners and/or their representatives to gain insight into their operations and internal controls. Interview workers and contractors to discuss their working relationships and determine appropriate classifications. Collect relevant information to ascertain the correct classification of workers and wages. Review financial records to reconcile reported taxes with employer payroll reports. Prepare comprehensive audit reports to substantiate audit findings and recommendations. Communicate audit findings to business owners and/or their representatives. Working Conditions

Candidates will be appointed to the Tax Auditor classification within the Employment Development Department and will receive a salary range of $4,425 - $7,194 per month. To be appointed to this classification, candidates must successfully complete the Auditor I exam.
