Position Overview

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is seeking a dedicated individual for the role of Conservation Fellow specializing in Latinx Art. This fellowship is part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing the visibility and study of Latinx contributions to American art.

Project Goals

Latinx art, produced by artists of Latin American descent residing in the United States, plays a crucial role in the narrative of American art history. The MFAH is committed to addressing the historical underrepresentation of these artists through the Aquí Estamos initiative, which seeks to create pathways for the exhibition and study of Latinx art.

Fellowship Responsibilities

The Conservation Fellow will:

1. Conduct thorough examinations of Latinx art pieces within the MFAH collection, assessing their condition and documenting findings.
2. Prepare detailed reports outlining materials, condition assessments, and treatment recommendations for artworks.
3. Collaborate with senior conservation staff on complex projects and contribute to the advancement of conservation practices.
4. Engage in field research and artist interviews to enrich the understanding of Latinx art.
5. Participate in workshops and meetings that foster professional development and collaboration among peers.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess a Master’s degree in conservation or a related field, along with at least two years of post-internship experience. A foundational understanding of museum practices and a strong commitment to the conservation of Latinx art are essential. Proficiency in both written and oral communication in English is required, while Spanish language skills are advantageous but not mandatory.
