Pharmacy Technician Per Diem Job Description

Mass General Brigham is seeking a per diem pharmacy technician to join our team in Dover, New Hampshire.

Job Summary

We are looking for a highly skilled and detail-oriented pharmacy technician to work on a per diem basis. As a pharmacy technician, you will play a critical role in supporting our pharmacy team and ensuring the safe and efficient dispensing of medications to our patients.

Responsibilities
  1. Prepare non-IV medication for dispensing under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, demonstrating accuracy, precision, and consistency relating to selection, packaging, and labeling functions.
  2. Fills assigned unit dose cassettes and prepares labels as needed in a timely manner to maintain established delivery schedules.
  3. Repackages medications according to department policy, maintaining proper documentation and ensuring that all work is checked by a pharmacist.
  4. Replaces medications (including controlled medications) to automated dispensing units.
  5. Informs charge nurse as well as pharmacist of all controlled drug inventory discrepancies, ensuring that all discrepancies are resolved within 48 hours.
  6. Screens phone calls and visitors to minimize pharmacist interruptions, assisting the pharmacist by charging for and screening information for missing doses.
  7. Accurately performs daily C-II safe functions by pulling narcotics for automated dispensing units (ADS), patient-specific narcotics, and refilling EMS kits.
  8. Prepares medication code trays as well as other code kits for crash carts according to policy and procedure.
  9. Distributes medications, as required, to patient areas of the hospital, accurately and efficiently delivering medications to patient care areas on an as-needed basis according to established policies and procedures.
  10. Consistently and thoroughly checks patient's medication cassettes at the time of cart exchange to ensure all needed medications are transferred to the current cassette.
  11. Assists in the creation, handling, and maintenance of a variety of pharmacy records to promote the efficient operation of the pharmacy and regulatory compliance.
  12. Accurately updates patient medication cassettes regarding admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  13. Accurately and consistently charges and credits patient medication from the cart fill lists.
  14. Accurately records quantities of medications issued when filling floor stock requests.
  15. Assists in maintaining proper inventory and control of medications and supplies purchased by the pharmacy.
  16. Maintains orderly stock levels of all medications in the dispensing area to facilitate the proper and timely filling of medication orders, as observed and checked by a pharmacist.
  17. Maintains work area in a neat, orderly, and clean condition, with medications stored in the dispensing area and workstations (including the IV room) maintained in a neat and orderly condition at all times to reduce potential for errors.
  18. Actively participates in the quality improvement activities of the department, completing and documenting all assigned medication storage area inspections on a monthly basis.
  19. Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable medications.
  20. Accurately records refrigerator temperature logs twice daily to assure proper storage conditions for medications.
Requirements
  • 1+ year of experience as a pharmacy technician.
  • 1+ year of experience as a hospital pharmacy technician.
  • HS Diploma or equivalent.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician from PTCB, NHA (formerly known as ICPT), or ASHP.
  • Pharmacy Automation and Computer skills.
  • NH Pharmacy Technician Registration required at time of hire.
  • National Pharmacy Technician Certification from PTCB within 90 days of hire.
