Project Engineer

Baker Construction is seeking a highly skilled Project Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our project management team, you will be responsible for supporting field activities and working closely with the Project Manager to ensure the successful delivery of projects.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the job transition process and support the management of cost and schedule, constructability, technical evaluations, quality, safety, work planning, procurement, contract management, and regulatory compliance.
  • Generate and obtain approvals of monthly billing and earned values, develop and manage project schedules, and analyze targets and goals, job cost summaries, and other reports.
  • Alert the Superintendent and Project Manager of project impact relating to resource management, crew make-up/size, and generate and obtain approval of the initial budget and subsequent updates.
  • Collaborate with pre-construction and the project team to manage the job transition process, communicate project requirements, and develop initial procurement plans, budgets, and technical records.
  • Generate material quantity take-offs, scoping documents, terms and conditions, delivery, and requests for proposal(s), solicit and review quotations, and recommend a procurement decision to the Project Manager.
  • Prepare field purchase orders for standard purchase packages, generate and obtain approval of Major Purchase Orders, and gather and rough-in monthly financial reports.
  • Work with the Project Manager to approve and code project invoices, generate and obtain approval of technical records, and coordinate with the Superintendent, Field Project Engineer, and Line and Grade to generate required as-built records.
  • Manage work package closure, punch lists, and project turnover process, and approve pre- and post-pour checklists.
  • Collect necessary documentation to identify and determine impact of potential contract changes, disputes, and claims, and lead LEAN/SQP committee and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Ensure all subcontractors are in compliance with terms of subcontracts, generate and obtain approval on impact notices as needed, and review and confirm reports documenting compliance with prevailing wage, workforce utilization, MBE/SBE participation, and advise the Project Manager of issues.
  • Interface with Safety and Risk Management in establishing clinics, managing first report of injuries, and assisting with co-worker case management, and follow Company Recruitment and Hiring Guidelines.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and 2 years' of experience or 6 years' of construction-related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft software programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • The following competencies are needed to successfully perform this job: ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business documents, technical procedures, and government regulations; ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures; ability to communicate well with all levels of workers involved with the project; ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, geometry, and trigonometry to practical situations; ability to analyze and compute mathematical differences from all stages of drawings from conceptual to final drawings including development of shop drawings; ability to understand Cost Accounting; basic understanding of construction software such as Primavera, Timberline, Vista, and the like; ability to understand, customize, and modify spreadsheets; ability to direct work and evaluate strengths and weaknesses of co-workers; ability to work in a team environment; ability to define problems, collect information, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; ability to develop construction schedule via the critical path method; ability to understand contracts, specifications, drawings, and scope of work; ability to be proactive in maximizing our return on investment at all times.
