SUMMARY
The Infection Control Nurse Specialist is well-versed in healthcare and hospital epidemiology principles, tasked with the surveillance, analysis, reporting, and education of staff regarding infections, healthcare-associated infections, infection prevention, and compliance with state and federal regulations. This role involves providing guidance to facilities through active collaboration with leadership, directing staff, and consulting with healthcare providers to foster evidence-based practices and quality care. The Infection Control Nurse Specialist supervises infection prevention and control initiatives through strategic planning, risk assessment, and the presentation of data in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of Norwood Crossing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assess, develop, and implement necessary skill enhancement programs for all staff members.
- Engage in the Campus Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) program meetings to analyze data that informs future staff development initiatives.
- Collaborate with Departmental Directors to pinpoint potential areas for development across the campus, creating course curricula to address the specific needs of each department.
- Oversee and manage Clinical Competency assessments for nursing staff and Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs).
- Regularly create and update effective educational materials, including outlines, lesson plans, and handouts.
- Monitor and instruct staff on adhering to safety protocols at all times.
- Continuously evaluate established policies and procedures related to safety, universal precautions, and hazard communication within the facility.
- Act as an educational resource, providing tailored guidance to meet educational needs.
- Investigate, assess, interpret, and report on healthcare-associated infection surveillance data using CDC/NHSN definitions and rates, including reviews of laboratory and microbiology reports, preparing reports for presentation, and communicating findings as necessary.
- Responsible for notifying local health departments or state agencies of communicable diseases and submitting required regulatory data in accordance with governmental guidelines.
- Conduct investigations of emergent or unusual infection clusters, outbreaks, or pathogen threats, collaborating with local and state health departments alongside the facility Medical Director and employee health when necessary.
- Initiate performance improvement activities, which may include action plans in response to surveillance or regulatory findings, leading multidisciplinary teams to address facility issues, and directing educational efforts that support these goals.
- Provide expertise to all departments and committees regarding infection prevention, including oversight of the facility's Infection Prevention and Control Plan and Goals, participation in Emergency Preparedness, staff orientation, annual education requirements, and policy reviews and updates.
- Deliver educational expertise directed at residents, families, visitors, and vendors concerning appropriate infection prevention practices.
- Encourage understanding and adherence to evidence-based practices related to preventive behaviors and attitudes.
- Maintain current knowledge of infection prevention standards, trends, developments, and regulatory requirements, enhancing professional expertise through literature review and attendance at relevant conferences and seminars.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in a long-term care environment.
- At least 1 year of supervisory experience.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in a health-related facility as an educator or trainer.
- Registered Nurse with current licensure in Illinois.
- Certification in specialized training for Infection Control.
