Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Ophthalmic Assistant to join our team at SSM Health. As an Ophthalmic Assistant, you will play a vital role in the care and treatment of eye care patients, working closely with our eye care providers to deliver exceptional patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist eye care providers in the exam and treatment of patients, ensuring a smooth and efficient experience for all patients.
  • Document patient information, including chief complaint, history of present illness, and ocular findings, in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Perform various tests and procedures, including visual acuity measurement, color vision testing, and tonometry, as directed by the eye care provider.
  • Act as a scribe, documenting clinically relevant interactions and dialogue during patient visits, including history and exam, diagnoses, orders, and patient instructions.
  • Provide patient education and support under the direction of the eye care provider, ensuring patients understand their treatment plans and follow-up instructions.
  • Assist with minor surgery procedures and laser treatments, including application and removal of dressings as directed.
  • Inventory and maintain surgical instruments in accordance with system and department standards.
  • Screen patients and call for emergency/urgent situations, obtaining pertinent information for the eye care provider.
Requirements
  • High School diploma/GED or 10 years of work experience.
  • One year of healthcare experience.
Physical Requirements
  • Constant standing and walking.
  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication.
  • Frequent use of hearing to distinguish body sounds and/or hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent reaching, gripping, and keyboard use/data entry.
  • Frequent use of vision for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, sitting, squatting, and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
  • Occasional use of vision to judge distances and spatial relationships.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Occasional lifting/moving patients.
  • Occasional use of smell to detect/recognize odors.
  • Occasional driving.
Required Professional License and/or Certifications
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) - International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) or Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
Work Environment

This is a day shift position in a fast-paced healthcare environment. The ideal candidate will be able to work effectively in a team setting, communicate clearly and effectively with patients and colleagues, and maintain a high level of professionalism and attention to detail.
