Position Overview:

The Freshwater Ecosystem Specialist is tasked with supporting the Lead Mussel Biologist in the management and upkeep of the freshwater mussel initiative for the Peoria Tribe. This role also encompasses involvement in restoration endeavors that may integrate a freshwater mussel aspect. Furthermore, the Specialist is accountable for the development and execution of any Environmental Program assigned to the Peoria Tribe. This position operates under the direct supervision of the Lead Mussel Biologist, the Hatchery Manager, and the Director of Natural Resources.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct both field and laboratory investigations of freshwater mussels and aquatic species.
  • Engage in all phases of the propagation process for freshwater mussels and aquatic life.
  • Oversee the care, maintenance, and growth of mussels and fish within the program.
  • Collaborate with Tribal entities, USFWS, BIA, State agencies, and other organizations on various projects.
  • Efficiently organize tasks to adhere to all project timelines and deadlines.
  • Assist in visual and tactile searches for mussels through wading and snorkeling techniques.
  • Maintain and service field and laboratory equipment.
  • Manage aquarium systems, ensuring optimal water quality and pond conditions for mussels and fish.
  • Participate in restoration initiatives related to freshwater mussels and other ecological projects.
  • Oversee funding-related responsibilities, ensuring deliverables and reporting are met if the fund covers salary.
  • Facilitate discussions with Tribal and community members to identify and document environmental concerns.
  • Represent the Tribe in the Tar Creek Trustee Council (TCTC) and other environmental and wildlife-related groups.
  • Attend and contribute to TCTC and related restoration meetings and calls.
  • Collect water, sediment, soil, and tissue samples for analysis.
  • Exhibit self-discipline to complete all grant deliverables and sampling tasks promptly.
  • Maintain and input sample data into relevant databases.
  • Prepare reports as required by the Tribe and funding agencies.
  • Travel for necessary training both within and outside the state.
  • Keep accurate files and records.
  • Comply with all grant reporting obligations.
  • This position is grant-funded; willingness to pursue new funding opportunities is essential.
  • Assist with the maintenance and operations of the Aquatic Facility.
  • Perform any additional tasks required for grant funding or project deliverables.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent; a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Environmental Sciences, or related fields is preferred.
  • Experience in water quality assessment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Office and other relevant software.
  • Excellent organizational and record-keeping abilities are necessary for maintaining accurate documentation.
  • Ability to engage effectively with Tribal and community members.
  • Reliable transportation with valid driver's license and insurance is required.
  • Willingness to learn and self-motivate is crucial.
  • Capability to operate trucks, boats, and trailers safely.
  • Preparedness to work in various weather conditions and aquatic environments.
  • Ability to operate mowers and other equipment as needed.
Certifications:
  • Valid Driver's License and Insurance.
