Lead Freshwater Mussel Conservationist

Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma is seeking a dedicated Lead Freshwater Mussel Conservationist to spearhead our vital Endangered Species and Freshwater Mussel Program.
This role offers the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the preservation of these crucial aquatic species within our tribal lands.
Your Responsibilities:
- Lead the identification, collection, propagation, and aquaculture management of native freshwater mussels.
- Direct field teams in conducting comprehensive mussel surveys, fish surveys, and habitat assessments.
- Collaborate with Tribal leaders, citizens, USFWS, State agencies, and other stakeholders to execute wildlife research, restoration, and augmentation projects.
- Contribute to research programs encompassing toxicology, phycology, and environmental assessments.
- Analyze large datasets, employing statistical techniques to interpret findings and generate insightful reports.
- Develop and deliver engaging outreach and education programs for Tribal citizens and local youth, fostering a deeper understanding of freshwater mussel conservation.
- Utilize GIS and GPS technology to effectively assess field sites and map critical habitats.
- Facilitate discussions with Tribal members and community representatives to identify, prioritize, and address their concerns regarding aquatic ecosystems.
Your Qualifications:
- Possess a Bachelor of Science in Field Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field. A minimum of 24 semester hours in scientific or technical coursework is required, including biology, chemistry, statistics, scientific writing, ecology, agriculture, environmental science, wildlife biology, and other relevant disciplines.
- At least 6 semester hours must be directly related to this position (fisheries management, ichthyology, malacology, phycology, aquatic botany, stream ecology, limnology, etc.).
- Alternatively, demonstrate at least two years of experience in mussel production, leading research projects, wildlife surveys, or environmental assessments. A strong understanding of statistical analysis and software is essential.
- A Master's degree in a related field is highly desirable.
