Position Overview
The PRN Radiation Therapist plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional patient care while administering ionizing radiation as per the directives of the Radiation Oncologist and under the guidance of the Physicist.
Key Responsibilities
The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Ensuring the accuracy of treatment documentation, including patient identity, treatment plans, and necessary calculations.
- Documenting all simulation and treatment parameters accurately.
- Adhering to established protocols for all procedures.
- Maintaining clinical proficiency in routine procedures and equipment operation.
- Preparing treatment rooms and equipment according to physician specifications.
- Administering and recording radiation doses daily.
- Ensuring compliance with departmental imaging standards.
- Assisting in patient scheduling and ensuring safe patient transfers.
- Monitoring patients for any unusual reactions and reporting findings to the appropriate medical staff.
- Maintaining cleanliness and organization in treatment areas.
- Conducting weekly chart audits to verify documentation accuracy.
- Submitting appropriate billing codes for services rendered.
- Performing simulations using CT technology.
- Ensuring all equipment is operational and ready for use.
- Completing additional tasks as assigned by supervising medical personnel.
Safety and Compliance
The Radiation Therapist must adhere to safety protocols to protect patients, staff, and themselves:
- Utilizing appropriate protective equipment during radiation exposure.
- Following universal precautions related to health hazards.
- Documenting safety concerns and equipment maintenance needs.
- Reviewing and signing the Radiation Safety Manual annually.
- Maintaining communication with patients throughout treatment.
Patient Education
Providing education and support to patients and their families is essential:
- Explaining treatment procedures and emergency protocols.
- Reinforcing care plans and managing side effects.
- Reporting any changes in patient conditions to the healthcare team.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, candidates must possess:
- An Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Radiation Therapy.
- A completed 12-month certificate program in Radiation Therapy.
- Certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
- Current state licensure.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Adaptability to changing environments.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional skills that are advantageous include:
- Familiarity with ARIA and Eclipse planning systems.
- Experience with Varian Truebeam Linear Accelerators.
- CT Simulation setup experience.
