Job Summary

SpaceX is seeking a highly skilled Manufacturing Engineer to join our team in the pursuit of making humanity a multi-planetary species. As a key member of our Materials Engineering team, you will play a critical role in the design and manufacturing of highly specialized optical components.


Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop manufacturable processes for the fabrication of optical components
  • Develop a cost-effective high-volume manufacturing process for polishing glass and SiC optical components
  • Collaborate with the design team and production organization to ensure smooth manufacturing ramp-up
  • Take ownership of introducing new products into high-rate manufacturing
  • Contribute to design reviews, providing expertise in design for manufacturability, testability, yield improvements, and supplier capabilities assessments
  • Perform root cause analysis of in-process failures and implement corrective actions
  • Develop and deliver training programs for production personnel and leadership

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in optical engineering, physics, mechanical engineering, materials engineering, electrical engineering, or other relevant engineering discipline
  • 3+ years of professional experience in optical materials and optical manufacturing engineering

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in optical engineering, physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials engineering, or other relevant engineering discipline
  • 6+ years of professional experience in optical materials and optical manufacturing engineering
  • Experience with high-volume and low-cost manufacturing of optical components
  • Proficiency in operating spherical and deterministic (aspheric) polishing equipment
  • Experience with metrology setup for null verification of concave and convex mirrors
  • Proficiency in scripting automated equipment, including CNC programming and machine tool setup
