Key Responsibilities
  • Provide direct supervision to Power Plant Operations personnel, ensuring they are trained and equipped to perform their duties effectively.
  • Assist the Operations Manager in all facets of department administration and power plant management, including planning, coordinating, and monitoring on-shift operations.
  • Serve as Acting Operations Manager in the absence of the Operations Manager and as the senior management person in the absence of the General Manager and all department heads.
  • Conduct routine tours of the power plant to inspect equipment, provide direction, supervision, and feedback to employees, and ensure that all safety rules and plant procedures are followed.
  • Maintain complete and accurate reports of downtime, outages, repair requirements, and production and performance indices.
  • Plan, direct, and perform functional testing of plant systems and components, interpreting data based on established standards and/or sound power plant practices.
  • Investigate plant problems, incidents, accidents, and unusual events, providing analyses, recommendations, reports, and appropriate follow-up plans.
  • Determine the need for and direct or perform routine operational tests and adjustments on all power plant systems and components, as required.
  • Perform tests on steam, water, and other samples when required.
  • Check daily consumption rates of chemicals, gases, fuels, water, and other consumables, monitoring inventories and initiating action to replenish same.
  • Ensure all in-plant switching and tagging of equipment is in accordance with approved procedures and prudent operations and maintenance practices.
  • Plan and direct housekeeping duties, ensuring housekeeping standards are maintained or initiating corrective action, as required.
  • Develop, review, and revise operating and related procedures, ensuring procedural compliance in the conduct of plant operations, maintenance, and personnel administration.
  • Support corrective maintenance efforts on selected equipment.
  • Develop and monitor planned daily operations work schedules to maintain adequate staffing.
  • Conceive, develop, and evaluate on-the-job and classroom training in operations-related subjects, preparing lesson plans, handouts, visual aids, examinations, qualification standards, and other material related to employee training and development.
  • Assist in the recruiting, screening, interviewing, and selection of candidates for employment or promotion within his/her area of responsibility.
  • Maintain logs, records, and data sheets, preparing and reviewing reports, trends, time sheets, material requisitions, work orders, and other administrative documents related to power and steam production.
  • Provide advice and counsel to the Operations Manager regarding the technical and administrative conduct of shift operations.
  • Communicate with other company personnel on-site and at other locations, representing the company in dealing with the public, steam and power customers, vendors, contractors, regulators, and other non-company personnel.
  • Support the Administration, Engineering, and Maintenance departments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Scope of Responsibility

The Power Plant Shift Supervisor operates from established and well-known procedures, performing duties independently with only general direction given. Decisions are made within policy constraints. The Shift Supervisor encounters new and varied work situations, involving a high degree of complexity.

The Shift Supervisor must ensure that all work is performed in a safe manner, resulting in no accidents, in compliance with all environmental permits at all times. The Shift Supervisor must effectively communicate information to the Operations Manager, fellow supervisors and managers, and subordinate operation and personnel, relative to the condition of the plant equipment and performance, and provide suggestions for plant improvement. Operations work schedule will be posted in advance for sufficient notice to employees. The Shift Supervisor must ensure duties are performed in such a way as to result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio.

All employees have the responsibility to both the customer and their co-workers to do the job right the first time and to ensure the customer's needs are being met.

Working Relationships

The Shift Supervisor reports to the Operations Manager, and supervises subordinate operations personnel. The Shift Supervisor cooperates with other supervisors and managers as needed in the daily operation of the plant.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

Physical requirements include sitting, standing, and walking. Occasional periods of lifting and climbing.

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.
