Position Overview

Expeditions Instructional Assistant/Substitute

This is a full-time hourly role for a duration of 10 months.

Summit Public Schools is seeking dedicated Expeditions Instructional Assistants to engage with students participating in our innovative Expeditions program. The role involves providing support to a classroom of middle or high school learners as they embark on various self-directed and small-group activities, offering coaching, encouragement, and guidance.

Students express a desire for greater autonomy, flexibility, and high-quality educational experiences that cater to their holistic needs. During the Expeditions period, students engage in activities that connect them with the local and global community beyond the traditional classroom. Examples include community service projects, online college courses, or collaborative explorations in specific fields. The Expeditions Instructional Assistant will collaborate with the Dean of Expeditions to facilitate these enriching experiences.

Positions are available across multiple Summit Public Schools campuses. Some roles may involve responsibilities at nearby school sites in addition to the primary location.

Furthermore, the Expeditions Instructional Assistant will act as a site-based substitute during periods when they are not directly involved in Expeditions.

Key Responsibilities:

The role encompasses serving as an in-person mentor and proctor for students involved in Summit Expeditions Experiences.

Classroom Management

  • Oversee students during virtual, independent, and group learning sessions.
  • Monitor student attendance and address any attendance-related issues.
  • Establish and maintain a safe and effective learning environment.
  • Create an engaging atmosphere that motivates students (e.g., building positive relationships, establishing routines).
  • Encourage active participation in projects and online coursework.
  • Assist with minor technical issues as they arise.

Student and Community Engagement

  • Foster positive relationships with students, families, and faculty.
  • Provide immediate feedback to students regarding their engagement and participation.
  • Communicate regularly with families and teachers to keep them informed of student progress.
  • Support the implementation of Summit's discipline process and connect struggling students with appropriate resources.
  • Collaborate with the Dean of Expeditions and other personnel to enhance the student experience.
  • Assist with additional duties and projects as needed.

Communication with Online Instructors

  • Maintain regular communication with online course instructors regarding student engagement.
  • Provide insights on student interactions with course content.

General Education and Substitute Teaching Support

  • During non-Expeditions periods, support teachers and students in core academic subjects or serve as a substitute teacher.
  • Responsibilities include delivering high-quality educational experiences based on provided plans.
  • Adapt instructional materials as necessary and provide tutoring to small groups or individuals.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required for substitute certification.
  • Experience working with youth is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Familiarity with Google Platforms is advantageous.
  • Clear health and background check required.
  • Willingness to travel to various school sites as needed.
  • Possession of a 30 Day Substitute Teaching Permit (CA) or Teacher Substitute Certificate (WA) or commitment to obtain one upon employment.
